Chinooks land in Vicksburg: Alderwoman Bailey thanks crews, community

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Friday, September 5, 2025, the City of Vicksburg Airport welcomed an unexpected but meaningful visit when military Chinook helicopters made a brief landing to refuel. While not a scheduled or planned event, the stop offered a unique opportunity for our community to witness firsthand the vital role our armed forces play in serving and protecting our nation.
“I was notified only shortly before the helicopters arrived and attended in my role as Alderwoman to observe,” said Alderwoman Vickie Bailey. “I was proud to welcome the military helicopters and their crews to the City of Vicksburg Airport. Their presence is a reminder of the strong partnership between the military and local communities like ours.”
On behalf of the City of Vicksburg, Alderwoman Bailey extended a heartfelt gratitude to the service members for their dedication and sacrifice, emphasizing that the airport stands ready to support their mission whenever needed.
Clarifying Community Questions
Alderwoman Bailey also addressed questions raised by residents regarding the event.
- The helicopters’ arrival was not a planned public event, but rather a routine refueling stop.
- Alderwoman Bailey was notified approximately 15 minutes before their arrival.
- Children seen in photos were already at the nearby playground, and with their guardian’s permission, they were allowed to view the helicopters and take pictures.
“This was a spontaneous moment that became a memorable experience for those who were nearby,” Bailey explained. “While we cannot plan for helicopter landings, we can create more intentional opportunities for our community — especially our youth — to enjoy engaging, educational, and inspiring experiences.”
A Special Thanks to Local Media
Alderwoman Bailey also expressed appreciation to VDN reporter Don Hill for quickly coming out to cover the event on such short notice.
“I want to sincerely thank Don Hill for capturing this moment and sharing it with our community,” Bailey said. “He was called out in the comments for mistakenly identifying the helicopters as Black Hawks instead of Chinooks, but let’s cut him some slack. He showed up fast, got the story out, and helped us all share in this unique experience. That’s what matters most.”
Commitment to Community Engagement
Vicksburg has long been a city defined by history, resilience, and service. Alderwoman Bailey reaffirmed her commitment to fostering opportunities that connect residents and strengthen community pride.
“Unexpected moments remind us of the excitement and potential in our community,” Bailey said. “Let’s keep building more experiences — together.”
Looking ahead, Alderwoman Bailey emphasized her dedication to expanding youth programs, hosting community events, and building partnerships that bring unique experiences to Vicksburg.
Closing
The City of Vicksburg remains proud to serve as a welcoming and reliable resource for all who pass through, whether for military operations, community events, or future opportunities yet to come.
