Today marks two years since firefighters’ tragic deaths

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Wednesday marked two years since the deaths of two Vicksburg firefighters who were killed in a 2023 crash. Firefighter and paramedic Jarod Squire and firefighter and EMT Derico Davis died when their vehicle struck a light pole, leaving a lasting impact on the department and the community.

The Vicksburg Fire Department honored the pair in a Facebook post remembering their service and sacrifice. The post quickly spread through the community, with residents sharing photos, memories, and kind words.

“It’s been two years since the Vicksburg Fire Department lost two incredible firefighters and even greater guys,” the post read. “To know them is to have loved them. Firefighter Jarod Squire and Firefighter Derico Davis will forever be missed and never forgotten. Godspeed, brothers — rest in heaven.”

At the time of their deaths, Squire had served with the department since 2020, and Davis joined in 2022. Both were known for their dedication to helping others and their strong camaraderie with fellow first responders as well as the community.

The loss of Squire and Davis remains deeply felt within the department and the city. Their commitment to protecting others continues to serve as an inspiration to their colleagues and the community they loved.
