City increases fines for truck route violations
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — In an effort to combat semi-trucks damaging city streets, the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Alderman passed an updated ordinance at the regular meeting held Monday, May 4.
The Board voted to update an existing ordnance from 2002 which set out specified truck routes for semi-trucks to protect city streets. The original ordinance carried a fine of $250 for an infraction.
However, semi-trucks continue to use the city streets and not follow the designated routes.
The new ordinance sets a fine of $1000 or 60 days in jail or both.
City officials said, “This should give us more teeth to keep the trucks from further damaging our streets.”
There are exceptions including any municipal, county or state truck; trucks making deliveries or picking up goods from businesses or residential locations; and construction vehicles with valid building permits. However, the trucks must use the most direct route to the destinations.
The new ordinance and maps of the truck routes can be found below.
