Amari Kelly named Vicksburg High School Class of 2026 Valedictorian
Amari Kelly is the valedictorian

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
Vicksburg High School senior Amari Kelly was named the Class of 2026 valedictorian and officially walked across the stage last Thursday to receive her diploma while representing the class as the school’s highest-ranking graduate.
“I wasn’t expecting to become valedictorian and when I found out I was very surprised,” Kelly said.
Kelly said she learned the news just two days before graduation after receiving a call from Principal Dr. Lampkin, giving her only 48 hours to prepare her speech for commencement.
“I was excited but nervous at the same time because I don’t talk much but I knew that I would have to give a big speech,” Kelly added.
During her time at VHS, Kelly maintained straight A’s throughout high school while remaining active in several organizations, including Band, DECA, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National Technical Honor Society and SkillsUSA.
Kelly said some of her favorite memories came on Friday nights at football games, especially during matchups against crosstown rival Warren Central High School. She also said her 10th grade biology class with Mrs. Aerial Stokes was one of her favorite high school experiences.
Following graduation, Kelly plans to attend Jackson State University on a band scholarship, where she will major in accounting.
Kelly is the daughter of Freddy and Deitrick Johnson.
