VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
A team state championship, multiple individual state titles and a season filled with victories helped define a breakout year for Warren Central sophomore swimmer Avery Greer.

Greer’s dominance in the pool earned her the Vicksburg Daily News Swimmer of the Year honor and made her the recipient of the Afton Wallace Award.
“This year was great and we won the state championship and everyone worked hard which made it even better,” Greer said.
At the state championship meet, Greer captured first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 400 freestyle relay. She also anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay team and played a major role in Warren Central bringing home the state title.
“I couldn’t believe we did it,” Greer said. “I felt very accomplished and I loved that we did it as a team.”
Before the state meet, Greer also dominated at the North State Championships where she earned first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Swimming success is nothing new for Greer. Since the age of 11, she has consistently found success in the water while competing with VSA and the Sunkist club swim teams. She said one of the reasons she loves swimming is because of the balance between individual competition and team success.

Although Greer recorded a few second-place finishes at the district meet earlier in the season, she finished the year stronger than ever. By the final two meets, she established herself as one of the top swimmers in the state while collecting gold medals and a state championship ring.
Her accomplishments also earned her a selection to compete in the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Swim Meet.
“I worked really hard so this is a great accomplishment and I tried to not focus on it but I’m glad I got it,” Greer said.
Greer was also named Warren Central’s Female Team MVP and still has two years remaining under Head Coach Terry Wong.
She now becomes just the second swimmer ever to receive the Vicksburg Daily News Swimmer of the Year honor, adding another milestone to an already inspiring sophomore season.
