The City of Vicksburg held a public meeting to discuss the proposed 2027 budget, anticipating over $38 million in revenue, primarily from property taxes and sales tax, with significant allocations for public safety and general government services.

City holds public meeting to review the 2027 budget. VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The City of Vicksburg held its 2027 budget hearing at the Robert M. Walker Building Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 5:30 p.m.
2027 Budget Overview
About 20 residents, city employees, and interested parties attended the meeting which began with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Doug Whittington, an accountant with the City of Vicksburg jumped right in and presented the budget. The city anticipates 2027 revenue will exceed $38 million, up $5 million from 2026. The increased revenue is largely due to the increase in property valuations the county announced earlier this year. Whittington noted that the city has not increased its millage rate since the 1990s. According to Whittington, the total 2027 budget is $38,557,108 with the following breakdown: • $11,080,000- Property Taxes •$9,200,000- Sales Tax •$5,775,000- Gaming Tax •$5,901,600- Permits, Service Fees, Court Fines •$3,615,982- State and County Sources •$2,985,127- Other The city’s recent agreement to provide ambulance services to medical providers is anticipated to add an estimated $2.5 million to 2027’s anticipated income which falls in the “Other” category. $23 million of the $38 million in revenue will go toward protecting life and property. Specifically, the police and fire departments, EMS, emergency management, and inspections. General Government that includes administration, legal, city court, clerk’s office, election, accounting, Human Resources, VTV, IT, and purchasing eats up the second largest portion of the pie at a cost of $7.8 million. Public works, which includes landscaping, street and building maintenance, is budgeted at just over $4 million. Public Health which includes animal control and mosquito control costs just under $1 million. Culture, and Parks and Recreation is budgeted at $1.8 million. Vicksburg’s economic Development which is the Main Street program is budgeted at $140,609. The Vicksburg Daily News inquired about the new Baxter Wilson plant and whether the city made any concessions or abatements on its valuation. City attorney Kim Nailor clarified the city did not make any agreement to abate taxes with the new plant. According to Entergy Mississippi the new facility should be functional by 2028 which will add millions to the city’s revenue through taxes. You can view the proposed budget below.
