Jefferson County High School track and field standout Charve’ Gibson has been recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives for her achievements on the national stage.

U.S. Rep. Bennie G. Thompson entered a tribute to Gibson into the Congressional Record on April 2, praising the sophomore for becoming the first Mississippian selected for the prestigious Nike Nationals Program.

According to Thompson’s remarks, Gibson earned the distinction after concluding her sophomore season ranked No. 7 in the nation in the triple jump with a mark of 42 feet, 1.25 inches. She also posted a long jump of 19 feet, 8 inches.

The Nike Nationals Program is an elite national platform reserved for top high school track and field athletes and is designed to help prepare competitors for collegiate and professional competition.

Thompson noted that Gibson achieved those accomplishments after returning to competition following a seven-month break from the sport. He also highlighted her status as a 46(now 48)-time All-American.

In his statement before the House of Representatives, Thompson said Gibson’s success has brought pride to the Jefferson County School District, her family, friends and the community.

“Mr. Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me in recognizing Ms. Charve’ Gibson, for her dedication, discipline and excellence she continues to display,” Thompson said in the Congressional Record. “This honor reflects her hard work while showcasing the rising potential and excellence of the entire Tiger Nation in Jefferson County.”

The congressman also thanked Gibson’s coach, Eddie Ray Jackson, for his role in her development and continued investment in her future.

Gibson was also recognized for representing Jefferson County and the state of Mississippi on the national stage through her participation in Nike Indoor Nationals.
