“Every child deserves the opportunity to begin the school year with confidence and the tools they need to succeed,” said Alderman TJ Mayfield. “Start Strong Vicksburg is a part of our DREAM initiative for bringing our community together to invest in our young people and support families as they prepare for a new school year. When we work together, we can make a real difference in the lives of our students.” We are thankful to community partners such as Kenny Green, Jeremy Meekins, Trent Thomas, and the Medgar and Angela Scott Foundation for their contributions to this project.”

The week’s activities include free book bags and school uniform pants for students, with free food and music provided at the Medgar & Angela Scott Foundation on Friday, July 24, 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, will feature Fresh Fade, Fresh Start with 50 free haircuts given at Headquarter Barber and Beauty. Pre-registration will be required. Wednesday, July 29, will feature free laundry services for 50 parents at Keyway Coin Laundry, and pre-registration is also required for this event.

“Preparing students for success goes beyond the classroom,” Mayfield said. “Whether it’s a backpack, a fresh haircut, clean clothes, or simply the encouragement of a supportive community, these resources help students start the year ready to learn and achieve. We are excited that these events will also be based around the City Wide Pep Rally which will take place on July 25 at the Vicksburg Mall starting at 6 p.m.”

Community members, businesses, churches, and civic organizations interested in supporting Start Strong Vicksburg are encouraged to partner with the initiative through donations, volunteer service, or sponsorship opportunities. All donations will be accepted via the United Way of West Central Mississippi, and volunteers are needed to fill backpacks on Friday, July 17 starting at 9 a.m. at Vicksburg Junior High and at the backpack distribution on July 24.
