Reeves holds campaign event
Tim Reeves, a candidate for District 3 School Board Trustee, held a campaign event in Vicksburg. He is challenging incumbent Jim Stirgus and emphasizes the need for responsible leadership in the school district’s budget management.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — District 3 School Board Trustee candidate Tim Reeves held a campaign event Thursday night at Oak Hall on Drummond in Vicksburg. Reeves is running against incumbent board member Jim Stirgus.
“For over a year, I felt this persistent tug to run for the school board. For most of that time, I did my best to completely squash that feeling,” said Reeves. “Recently, the tug grew undeniably. My belief was that God was nudging, pulling, and downright kicking me to do this.”
Tim and his wife, Stephanie, have three children: Sarah Cameron Fancher, Clayton, and Fin Reeves. Clayton and Fin are currently students at the Academy of Innovation. Sarah Cameron is beginning her senior year at Mississippi State University, majoring in kinesiology. Sarah Cameron is a 2024 graduate of River City Early College and a five-year letterman with WCHS’ softball program.
Reeves explained, “My reason is my two sons, middle schoolers at the Academy of Innovation, and the more than 6,000 other students in this district who deserve something better from their school board. They deserve better than someone sitting on that board just to extend a personal legacy or fill a missing gap in a long public persona. They deserve someone who will ask the tough questions, even the ones that feel ‘stupid,’ and keep asking them until we get clear, truthful answers, not just what leadership thinks we want to hear.”
Attending the event was Debbie Peacock, who said, “Our district is spending money like they have unlimited funds.” Peacock went on to say, “I don’t think most mind paying the taxes, it’s what they do with it.”
“This year alone, the board approved a budget that was nearly $2 million in the negative forcing the district to burn through cash reserves just to cover the shortfall. That isn’t responsible leadership, it’s bad business,” said Reeves.
Tim is the son of two long-time public school teachers and has been a long supporter of public education, specifically the Vicksburg Warren School District, since the family moved to Vicksburg in 2014. Tim spent nearly 25 years in the newspaper industry before joining the team at ERDC in May 2021. The family is members of First Baptist Church Vicksburg, and Tim is a past president of the United Way of West Central Mississippi.
