Belhaven rolls past Millsaps 50-24 in Thursday matchup

JACKSON, Miss. (VDN)Belhaven University used a balanced attack and a dominant second half to defeat crosstown rival Millsaps College 50-24 on Thursday night.

Millsaps struck first when Braxton Garmon broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Belhaven answered with a 15-play, 72-yard drive capped by a 1-yard scoring run from Caleb Gallashaw to even the game at 7.

The Blazers took control in the second quarter with back-to-back touchdowns — a 2-yard run from Julien Tabor and another short plunge by Gallashaw — to build a 21-7 lead. Millsaps cut the margin before halftime on a 36-yard field goal by Connor Babin and a 19-yard touchdown pass from Grant Bizjack to Greg Donaldson, making it 21-17 at the break.

Belhaven exploded in the second half. Quarterback Brock Morris connected with R.J. Garrison for a 59-yard touchdown and later found Gallashaw on a 14-yard scoring pass. T.J. Hatch added a 15-yard touchdown run with a successful two-point conversion, and Martavious Stevens capped the night with a 4-yard touchdown run in the final minutes.

Millsaps’ only second-half highlight came on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Bizjack to Blake Wiley in the fourth quarter.

Gallashaw finished with three total touchdowns — two rushing and one receiving — to lead the Blazers, who improved to 1-0 with the win. Millsaps fell to 0-1.
