VICKSBURG, MS. –A black bear was hit and killed by a vehicle last night approximately a half mile south of the Yazoo exit on Highway 61 N southbound. MDWF&P officials stated that it is unlikely that this is the same bear spotted near downtown Vicksburg earlier this week.

“We received the call [at] 12:30 a.m. Deputies and MHP (Mississippi Highway Patrol) responded and MHP took a report from the driver. Wildlife was notified and met me and a deputy up there this morning to retrieve the bear,” said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace.

According to MDWF&P officials on the scene, the bear was a young male, approximately 220-230 pounds. The incident where the black bear was killed highlights the risks wildlife face near highways. Young males are the most likely black bears seen during the summer months.
