Blast from the past: Artillery drill and firing demonstrations Saturday at VNMP
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Visitors to the Vicksburg National Military Park will have a chance to experience a blast from the past during the King of Battle: Artillery Drill and Firing Demonstration event this Saturday, May 24. 2025.
The event features four live demonstrations, scheduled for 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the park, located at 3201 Clay St. Each demonstration will showcase authentic artillery drills, highlighting the skill and coordination required by Civil War-era artillery crews.
The program is part of the park’s ongoing living history, which aims to bring the stories of the Civil War to life for modern audiences. Park rangers and volunteers in period uniforms will conduct the drills, offering a look at the techniques used by artillerymen during the Siege of Vicksburg.
Officials said the demonstration serves as both a historical reenactment and an educational opportunity for visitors of all ages to better understand the role of artillery during the Civil War and its impact on battlefield tactics.
Admission to the event is included with entrance to the park. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early for preferred viewing and to follow all safety guidelines as the demonstrations include live firing.
