WEST POINT, Miss. (VDN) — Brett Morgan, Vicksburg native, has guided the West Point High School football team to yet another state championship appearance. Morgan, now in his second year as head football coach at WPHS, led the Green Wave to a 20-6 win over Holmes County Central on Friday night to claim the MHSAA 5A North State Championship.

West Point trailed 6-0 early after the Jaguars reached the end zone, but the Green Wave quickly responded. Kingston Branham put West Point on the board with a 22-yard touchdown run and later added a 1-yard score. Quarterback Quintin Thompson sealed the night with a 17-yard touchdown pass, rounding out the Green Wave’s scoring.

The remainder of the matchup turned into a defensive battle, with West Point controlling the pace and securing its 10th straight trip to a state title game.

“It wasn’t pretty,” head coach Brett Morgan told The Dispatch. “Holmes County, you have to tip your hat to them — they fought their guts out. They played us extremely hard. We didn’t play perfect, but we found a way to win. Just survive and advance this time of year. We get an opportunity to go play in our 10th straight state championship, so we have to keep going.”

West Point will face Brookhaven High School on Thursday at Davis Wade Stadium for the 5A state championship.
