Coahoma Community College is proud to announce Byron Johnson as the new Assistant Softball Coach, bringing a wealth of athletic talent, coaching experience, and an enduring passion for the game. A native of Portland, Arkansas, Johnson’s journey from a small-town athlete to an accomplished coach exemplifies his dedication to sports and his commitment to fostering the growth of student-athletes both on and off the field.
Johnson began his educational and athletic journey at Hamburg School District before graduating from Oak Grove High School in 2009. Known for his exceptional athleticism, he quickly became a household name in his hometown for his prowess in basketball and track. To this day, Johnson holds the Highest Scoring record at Oak Grove High School, a testament to his talent and determination. While his accolades in basketball and track are remarkable, his first love has always been baseball—a passion instilled in him at a young age by his father, who introduced him to the sport as soon as he was old enough to grip a bat.
This lifelong affinity for the diamond transitioned into softball when Johnson became a father. Eager to share his love of the game with his children, he introduced his eldest daughter to softball, sparking a new chapter in his athletic career. Over the past seven years, Johnson has immersed himself in the softball community, coaching and training athletes in both league and travel settings. His dedication has yielded outstanding results, including numerous championship victories that underscore his ability to lead and inspire teams to success.
“Softball has been such a big part of my life these last few years; I can’t imagine a life without it,” Johnson shares. His unwavering passion for the sport and his commitment to mentoring young athletes have solidified his reputation as a dynamic and influential coach.
In his new role as Assistant Softball Coach at Coahoma Community College, Johnson brings not only his extensive knowledge of the game but also a unique ability to connect with players and cultivate their skills. His experience as a coach, coupled with his firsthand understanding of the challenges and triumphs of athletic competition, makes him a valuable asset to the Coahoma Tigers softball program.
“Byron Johnson’s addition to our coaching staff marks an exciting new chapter for our softball program,” says Selina Reid, Athletic Director at Coahoma Community College. “His passion for the game, coupled with his proven track record of developing athletes and leading successful teams, aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of Coahoma softball.”
Johnson currently resides in Conway, Arkansas, with his wife and their four children. His dedication to his family mirrors his commitment to his players, as he seeks to build not only skilled athletes but also strong, confident individuals. Coahoma Community College is thrilled to welcome Johnson to the Tiger family and looks forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly have on the softball program and the broader campus community.
