City, MDOT partner for skilled workforce increase

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The City of Vicksburg has partnered with the Mississippi Department of Transportation to help develop skills for the city workforce.

Ward 1 Alderman TJ Mayfield has announced a new partnership between the City and MDOT which will provide free professional development and safety training opportunities for all City of Vicksburg employees.

According to a release from Alderman Mayfield, the initiative represents a continued investment in the City’s workforce by offering specialized training designed to improve leadership, increase workplace safety, and expand the technical skills of city employees. By providing access to instruction free of charge, the partnership emphasizes the City’s commitment to building a more knowledgeable and capable workforce.

Alderman Mayfield this is a very special project for him.

“Bolstering the workforce is obviously critical, but having a skilled labor force is vastly important,” said Alderman Mayfield. “I have been working on this since April, and I’m glad to see it finally come to life.”

The cooperative training schedule includes basic supervisory skills, asphalt crack sealing, leadership skills for supervisory personnel, chainsaw safety, dealing with difficult people, bucket truck safety, Traffic Supervisor, and tractor and mower safety operation. Participants will gain practical knowledge they can apply immediately, helping departments operate more efficiently and improving service delivery to Vicksburg citizens.

In the release, Alderman Mayfield emphasized workforce development remains one of the most effective ways the city can improve public services and prepare employees for future challenges.

“Our employees are the backbone of city government,” Mayfield said. “We are investing in the long-term success of Vicksburg, and these training opportunities will strengthen individual skill sets and also improve the quality of services our residents expect and deserve.”

The Alderman also expressed his appreciation to MDOT for recognizing the value of collaborative workforce development and partnering with Vicksburg to make these opportunities available.

“This partnership demonstrates what can be accomplished when state and local agencies work together with a shared commitment to workforce development,”Alderman Mayfield added. “Providing our employees with access to high-quality training ensures they are better prepared to meet the evolving demands of public service while continuing to serve our community with professionalism.”
