Coahoma Community College Names New Softball Coach
By: Jerome Coley – Sports Information Director
Coahoma Community College is thrilled to announce the appointment of Jordan Carlson as the new Head Softball Coach. Carlson brings a wealth of experience, resilience, and a profound love for the game. Her journey is an inspiring testament to dedication, perseverance, and the transformative power of sports.
Born and raised in Council Grove, Kansas, Carlson’s passion for athletics was nurtured by her parents, Lauri and Justin Carlson. Encouraged to explore various sports, she excelled in five sports during high school: softball, track & field, golf, cross country, and basketball. Supported by her family, including her three sisters, Vanessa, Lauren, and Mija, and grandparents, Steve and Kay Taylor, she developed a strong foundation in teamwork and perseverance.
Choosing to pursue softball at Butler Community College, she quickly made her mark. Her freshman year saw the team placing third at nationals, followed by an outstanding sophomore year where she earned all-conference and all-region honors, and was part of the academic All-American team for both years. She graduated with an Associates degree in Education.
In a selfless act of generosity, she donated a kidney to a teammate’s father after her sophomore year, exemplifying her character and commitment to others. Despite concerns about her athletic future, she continued to excel, transferring to Francis Marion University where she completed her final two years of softball amid the challenges of COVID-19. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics.
Following her graduation, Carlson embraced the role of assistant coach at Independence Community College, leading the team to its first-ever national tournament appearance. During her tenure, she earned a Masters of Arts in Sports Management and had the unique opportunity to coach her sister, Mija Carlson. Her time at Independence was marked by numerous achievements and personal fulfillment.
Now ready to lead her own program, Carlson joins Coahoma Community College with a vision to build a successful and holistic program. She aims to instill in her players the values of hard work, resilience, and character, inspired by her father’s words: “You won’t be the biggest, you won’t be the strongest, but no one will ever outwork you.”
Coahoma Community College is honored to welcome her as our new Head Softball Coach. Her story of perseverance, dedication, and triumph will undoubtedly inspire and uplift our students. It is a great day to be a Tiger!
