FLOWOOD, Miss. (VDN) — Alvin Moore, a Birmingham native known for his extraordinary work ethic and decades of service in athletics and education, will receive the Roscoe Nance Lifetime Achievement Award during the SWAC Alumni Association’s Legends Awards and Roast on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Refuge Hotel and Conference Center in Flowood.

Moore, a former Alcorn State University football standout, entered the university on scholarship in 1967 after graduating from Carver High School. Initially signed as a defensive lineman, Moore switched to offensive tackle during his sophomore year and later moved to center, where he excelled. He was named to the All-SWAC team and played a key role in Alcorn State’s success from 1968 to 1970, helping secure two outright SWAC championships and a tie for the title one year. The team also won back-to-back Black College National Championships in 1968 and 1969.

After completing his eligibility in 1971, Moore signed a free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys.

Following graduation, Moore returned to Birmingham and spent 42 years as a coach and educator. He served as head basketball coach, assistant football coach and athletic director at Phillips High School from 1993 to 2000. When Phillips closed in 2001, Moore transitioned to Carver High School, where he held the same roles until his retirement in 2014.

As a high school basketball coach, Moore guided his teams to more than 600 victories and four appearances in the state tournament semifinals or finals. He coached the Alabama all-star teams in 1975 and 2003, both winning their respective games.

Moore was inducted into the Alcorn State Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Hall of Honors in 2013. He also entered the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2014. As a longtime supporter of his alma mater, he currently serves as president of both the Birmingham Alcorn State Alumni Chapter and the Alcorn State A-Club. Under his leadership, more than $100,000 has been donated to Alcorn State’s athletics department and more than $5,000 to other university needs.

He also serves as chaplain and sergeant at arms of the Alcorn State National Alumni Association, and as treasurer and business manager on the board of the SWAC Alumni Association.

A dedicated member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church since 1984, Moore chairs the Deacon Ministry, leads the Married Couples Ministry, and serves on the Finance Committee. His religious service includes roles such as Man of the Year for the National Baptist Laymen, president of the Alabama State Baptist Laymen, and director of the National Baptist Junior Laymen.

In 1976, Moore was stricken by a rare disease that left him paralyzed for several months. Through physical therapy and perseverance, he made a full recovery. His life motto is, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

The SWAC Alumni Association’s Legends Awards and Roast honors former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff members who have made a lasting impact on the conference. Proceeds benefit the Degree Completion Scholarship Fund, which supports student-athletes within 30 credit hours of graduation after their eligibility has expired.
