Green named VDN’s Junior High Football Coach of the Year
For the second consecutive year, Louis Green has been named the recipient of the VDN Junior High Football Coach of the Year Award, also known as the Coach Chip Award. Green guided WCJHS to an impressive 6-1 season last fall, coming just one game short of competing in the prestigious Little Six Championship.
“I think it went very well and the biggest thing to see is where they started to where they ended and the team matured a lot,” Green said.
The Vikings’ only defeat came at the hands of the eventual champions, Germantown. They secured significant victories against formidable opponents such as Northwest Rankin, Vicksburg, Clinton, Brandon, and Madison Middle School.
“The biggest highlights were how well they responded to things and we overcame a lot of obstacles,” Green added.
Despite facing challenges with limited practice sessions due to high temperatures, WC showed resilience throughout the season. Coach Green acknowledged the dedication and hard work his team displayed, starting from the summer and carrying through the entire season, to outperform their rivals.
“From the time the game started to the time the game ended, we played well on special teams, offense and defense,” Green said. “It’s really tough in junior high football because you never know what you’re going to have but they always encouraged each and never made excuses.”
While Green holds the title of Head Coach, he emphasized the invaluable contributions of his entire coaching staff, attributing much of the team’s success to their collective efforts.
“A head coach is only as good as his assistant coaches,” Green added.”They handle a lot of issues that I don’t see because they take of it. One guy in particular is Coach Swartz because he’s been coaching a long time and he did great with the offense but I think my entire staff is the best in Mississippi.”
Receiving this award highlights Green’s achievements as a head coach, underscoring his selfless commitment to prioritizing his athletes’ development into young men. The recognition is well-deserved, reflecting Green’s continuous dedication to his players and the sport.
“I can’t speak enough to winning this award but the players are the most important part and just because I win the award it doesn’t mean it was just me because this entire program is worth being highlighted,” Green said.
As WCJHS concludes its spring training, Coach Green is diligently preparing his team for the upcoming 2024 season. Any students interested in joining the football program at WCJHS is encouraged to reach out directly to Coach Green.
