VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Keith Phillips, sports writer for the Vicksburg Daily News, is celebrating his birthday today.

Phillips joined the Vicksburg Daily News in October 2019. Since then, he has covered sporting events, courtroom happenings and everything in between throughout the Vicksburg area.

In fact, it was a tip from Phillips that first connected him to the VDN team. In October 2019, he alerted the newsroom to a special moment planned at a local football game—a child presenting flowers to their mother battling cancer. That moment led to a story, and soon after, a position on the team.

A graduate of Vicksburg High School, Phillips went on to study at the University of Southern Mississippi. In addition to his reporting, he coaches youth sports at the YMCA and often works the front desk, greeting and assisting members.

Since joining VDN, Phillips has built a reputation for highlighting the achievements of young athletes in Vicksburg and Warren County. From home runs to game-winning shots, his coverage often shines a light on accomplishments by athletes as young as 6 years old.

He has also created several special awards to honor the memory of late coaches and athletes. These awards are given to current players and coaches who exemplify the spirit of giving and dedication of those remembered.

“Keith Phillips is one of the hardest-working and kindest people I’ve ever met,” said VDN Publisher David Day. “We are honored that he has chosen to serve the community on our platform.”

If you see Phillips today, take a moment to wish him a happy birthday—and thank him for his tireless efforts to bring joy and recognition to our community.
