Johnson Street renamed in honor of Rev. Robert Lee Miller

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The City of Vicksburg has renamed Johnson Street to Rev. Robert L. Miller Street in honor of the late Reverend Robert Lee Miller, a longtime minister, educator, civil rights activist, and community leader. The ceremony marking the renaming was held this afternoon at Holly Grove M.B. Church.
“It is both my honor and privilege to pay tribute to a remarkable man, the late Reverend Robert L. Miller,” said Mayor George Flaggs Jr. “As we rename the street in his honor, we recognize that this isn’t just about placing the name on a sign. It’s about honoring a life of purpose, leadership and impact. It is about making sure that future generations know the kind of man Reverend Miller was: committed to his values and dedicated to his community.”
Born April 4, 1926, in Vicksburg, Miller dedicated his life to faith, education, and service. A World War II veteran, he earned his high school diploma in 1948 after his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. His ministry spanned decades, including his tenure as pastor at Holly Grove M.B. Church, beginning April 7, 1972. He also pastored several other churches, including China Grove M.B. , Pleasant Valley M.B., New Mount Zion M.B., and Locust Grove M.B.
Miller played a significant role in the Warren County Baptist Association as its moderator. He was also a consistent voice for civil rights and social justice during a pivotal era in American history.
“I would like to say, as we leave here today, let us all continue to build on his legacy, and that of many others that contributed to the growth of Vicksburg, Mississippi,” said Rev. Miller’s daughter, Dr. Angela Miller Gobar.
