It is with deep respect and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of James Edward Kemp, Sr., who was born on October 20, 1939, and departed this life on June 14, 2026. A man of dedication and faith, James lived a full life marked by his commitment to both his career and his love for music and community.

James was employed for many years as a truck driver, serving with distinction at Vicksburg Ready Mix and MMC Trucking companies. Throughout his professional journey, he exemplified hard work, reliability, and a strong work ethic, earning the respect of colleagues and acquaintances alike.

Beyond his vocational pursuits, James was a proud and passionate piano player. His music was more than just a pastime; it was a gift he generously shared with others. Through his piano playing, he brought joy to audiences and lifted spirits with songs of praise to the Lord. His performances touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of listening. James lent his musical talents to various churches throughout Vicksburg, enhancing worship experiences and touching lives through his devoted service.

James Edward Kemp, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, John Allen Kemp and Zellina Sykes Gilliam; his brothers, Jessie Ray Gilliam and Raymond Gilliam; his sisters, Delmarie Burns and Christine Steward; and his beloved daughter, Lisa Kemp.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Eleese Kemp of Vicksburg, Mississippi; two daughters, Janice Kemp Harrison and Varie Kemp, both residing in Vicksburg, Mississippi; two sons, James Edward Kemp, Jr. of Jackson, Mississippi, and Jaimee Kemp of Clinton, Mississippi; two brothers, Cozell Gilliam and Victor Gilliam, both of Vicksburg, Mississippi; two sisters, Evelyn Montgomery and Debra Johnson, both of Vicksburg, Mississippi; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory and legacy.

Visitation will be held on June 18, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the C J Williams Mortuary Center located at 1625 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi 39180. The funeral service will follow on June 19, 2026, beginning at 12:00 noon,  also at the C J Williams Mortuary Center.

James Edward Kemp, Sr.’s life was a testament to steadfast dedication, spiritual faith, and profound love for family and community. He will be deeply missed, remembered fondly, and revered for the enduring impact he made on those who knew him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
