Local AARP Chapter holds membership drive
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The West Central Mississippi AARP Chapter #4967 held its annual membership drive Tuesday, May 12 at the City of Vicksburg pavilion.
Ruth Christian, President of the local chapter, said there are many benefits to joining the organization.
“We are actively looking for members who want to be engaged and help with our community projects,” said Christian.
Vicksburg leadership was on hand to assist with the membership drive. Alderman TJ Mayfield rolled up his sleeves to help serve the meal at the event, and Mayor Willis Thompson arrived to show support of the local seniors.
AARP is the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people to choose how they live as they age. Nationwide the organization boasts nearly 38 million members. Members must be at least 50 years old in order to join.
Individuals interested in joining the local chapter must be registered with the national organization. For a limited time, members can join for as little as $11 per year for the national organization and only $10 per year for the Vicksburg branch.
Christian said the group uses the fees to put toward community events. Currently there are 92 active members of the West Central Mississippi Chapter.
Benefits include discounts on hotels, restaurants, health seminars and information on frauds aimed at deceiving the elderly.
