MHP releases statement about 2026 Labor Day Holiday Travel period. VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) is preparing for the 2026 Labor Day holiday travel period which is set to begin on Friday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. and will conclude on Monday, Sept. 7, at midnight.
High-Visibility Patrols During Labor Day Travel
Troopers will implement high-visibility patrols and establish safety checkpoints throughout the Labor Day travel period to ensure safe travel across Mississippi roadways. Our primary objective during this holiday weekend is to deter speeding and impaired or distracted driving, prevent fatal crashes, and enforce seatbelt usage.
Ensuring Safe Travel Across Mississippi
“Labor Day weekend is a time for family, friends and enjoying the final days of summer, but safety has to remain a priority on our roadways,” said Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell. “Every driver has a responsibility to make choices that protect not only themselves, but everyone traveling around them. Slow down, stay focused, buckle up and plan ahead if alcohol is part of your celebration. We are grateful to the law enforcement officers and first responders who will spend their holiday working to keep Mississippians safe.”
During the 2025 Labor Day holiday travel period, MHP investigated 159 crashes with 3 of those being fatal crashes with 3 fatalities, issued 617 citations for occupant restraint violations, and made 92 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems.
