Millenials and GenZ are flocking to Mississippi
A recent study shows that Mississippi has attracted 12,000 more residents than it lost in 2022.
The pandemic opened up the floodgates of interstate mobility, which reached a decade-high in 2022 with approximately 8.2 million people on the move. That has meant an influx for certain states and an exodus from others.
So, where do Americans want to live right now — and why?
Mississippi rises to the top 20 on the list as the 17th-most sought-after state in the nation by net migration. According to research, Mississippi attracted around 12,000 more residents than it lost in 2022, a significant influx in light of the state’s relatively small total population.
What is surprising? Among the 186 people who moved to The Magnolia State every day, 27% were millennials.
Here is a snapshot of the notable findings regarding Mississippi uncovered by our research:
- The top states fueling interstate moves: Neighboring Tennessee (18%), Louisiana (17%) and Alabama (10%) dominate inflow into Mississippi, followed by those coming from Texas (8%) and Florida (7%).
- Why are so many people moving to The Magnolia State? The housing affordability and booming job market are big draws for a lot of people choosing Mississippi. Homes are about 44% more affordable than those in Tennessee, 42% cheaper than in Texas and 55% less than in Florida.
- From a generational standpoint, millennials made up the largest portion of movers to Mississippi at 27%. They were followed by Gen Zers as the second-largest generation by percentage of movers, at 25%.
