Mississippi nonprofits spent $850K, delivered just 35 HIV tests
JACKSON, Miss. (VDN) — Three Mississippi nonprofits spent more than $850,000 in taxpayer funds over four years but administered only 35 HIV tests, according to a new report from the state auditor’s office.
The analysis found that instead of using grant money for its intended purpose, the organizations spent state funds on personal expenses such as midnight Lyft rides in New York City and “Queerceanera” events.
“These examples show how state agencies send non-profits taxpayer money with questionable results and little to no scrutiny. This can’t continue,” State Auditor Shad White said in a statement.
White is recommending that nonprofits receiving state funds be required to submit, under penalty of perjury, documentation to the Department of Finance and Administration. That would include how much money was received, what services were provided and whether any subgrants were made to other organizations.
White also encouraged Mississippians to report any suspected misuse of nonprofit funds to nonprofitwaste@osa.ms.gov.
“Taxpayers in Mississippi deserve more transparency in how their money is spent,” White said.
