“I like the environment at Hinds because it gives off HBCU vibes and I love the environment,” Perkins said.

Perkins spent her senior year cheering on the basketball teams at WC where she grew to love the sport. She testified that the cheer battle between WC and Port Gibson High School was one of her best memories.

“I love cheering because as a team we bonded and made lots of memories with each other,” she added.

As graduation is approaching next week for Perkins, she has everything in place to cheer on the next level.

“Hinds has a lot of good offers for scholarship and it’s basically free but I wanted to get my feet wet first before I got to a university,” Bohanon said.

Bohanon is also a first-year cheerleader who was one of the athletes in charge of pumping up the crowd during the games.

“I love interacting with the crowd and getting everyone hyped up,” he said.

Bohanon mentioned that his favorite cheer moment was against Jim Hill where the crowd was loud and you could feel the presence of the cheer team.

“I chose Alcorn State because it’s the best HBCU in the country and I also want to continue my family’s legacy,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery began competitive cheer at the age of seven and stuck with the sport throughout high school. She eventually became one of the captains of her cheer squad and became an All-American.

As many memories were made during high school cheer, Montgomery mentioned that battling Vicksburg High was the best.

“Since we couldn’t talk on social media, we had fun at the game but we left it all on the floor,” she said.

Montgomery will be cheering for both the basketball and football teams at ASU and she will also be majoring in nursing.

“I feel like I worked hard for this and I’ve always dreamed of being an Alcorn cheerleader.
