flood body found in forest

SHARKEY COUNTY, Miss. – Remains were found in a Sharkey County forest last Wednesday.

Last Wednesday, November 20, 2024, hunters discovered the skeletal remains in a Sharkey County Forest. According to Sharkey/Issaquena Coroner Robert Barfield, the remains had been there for some time. He described them as skeletal. Some items were found at the location that may help investigators identify the remains.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the case.

The exact location of the body was not shared with the Vicksburg Daily News and was only described as “the forest.” The remains were sent to the crime lab for further investigation.

Remains found last year as well

In January of 2023, human remains were found near Steele Bayou in Issaquena County. The item was recovered and sent to the crime lab for investigation. In that event, hunters also discovered the remains near the river bank. The scant evidence led to speculation that the remains may have been related to a prior flooding event in the area.

“Remains of that type may take years, even decades to identify,” said Coroner Barfield.

UPDATE – 4:09 p.m. – Coroner Barfield reports the remains were found in the Delta National Forest.
