VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Shalanda Harris has been selected as the Vicksburg High School 2025–2026 Teacher of the Year, an honor announced by Vicksburg High School officials in December through a post on the school’s Facebook page.

Harris is currently in her fourth year of teaching, all of which have been spent at Vicksburg High School. She said the time has played a major role in her professional development as an educator.

“Over these four years, I have grown tremendously as an educator, learning how to better connect with students and create meaningful learning experiences,” Harris said.

A Vicksburg High School graduate herself, Harris said returning to teach at her alma mater has been especially meaningful. She credited the school’s culture for making her experience rewarding.

“What I like most about teaching at VHS is the supportive environment,” Harris said. “The administration, staff and students work together to create a school culture that values growth, respect and excellence.”

Throughout her teaching career, Harris has taught exclusively at VHS, where she has worked with diverse learners and built strong relationships within the school community.

Harris earned her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and a master’s degree in business administration from Alcorn State University. She also earned a master’s degree in teaching from Jackson State University and is currently pursuing a specialist degree in instructional leadership from William Carey University.

She said her favorite part of teaching is witnessing student growth in and out of the classroom.

“My favorite thing about teaching is seeing students grow academically, socially and personally,” Harris said. “Knowing that I can make a positive impact in their lives is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Harris said her goal is for students to become confident, responsible and lifelong learners who believe in their abilities.

Being named Teacher of the Year came as a humbling moment for Harris, as the honor is determined by a vote among fellow teachers.

“Being named Teacher of the Year is truly an honor,” she said. “I am grateful and humbled to be recognized, especially among so many hardworking and dedicated educators.”

In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Harris serves as the varsity basketball cheer coach and assistant advisor for Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society.

She said her daily motivation comes from her students.

“The main thing that gets me out of my bed each morning is thinking about my students and seeing their smiling faces and preparing them to be college and career ready,” Harris said.
