Sonny Edwards: 1948-2025

VICKSBURG, Miss. — Albert  “Sonny” B. Edwards, Jr. passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the age of 76.

Albert was born in Hollandale, MS on September 20, 1948. He graduated from Glen Allan High School in 1966. He started his career as the Maintenance Supervisor at the Mississippi Department of Corrections and worked his way up to Bureau Director 3, retiring after 25 years of service. The job he was most proud of was being Papaw, making memories with this his grandchildren and his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Roy “Pap” Ross and Esther Johnston Ross, Uncle, Bobby Johnston, and Aunts, Marie Clayton, Katie Johnston, Lorene Nichols Craft and Hannie Wade House.

He is survived by his sons Michael Edwards (Julie), Robert Edwards (Jane Clare) and Chris Ratliff (Caroline), daughter Vanessa Ratliff (Austin), Theresa Ratliff (Morris), aunt and uncle Billy and Viola Johnston, sisters Mae Hardy (Jim) and Brenda Giles, grandchildren Payton Edwards, Megan Edwards, Morgan Edwards, Michael Christopher Edwards, Andrew Gilbert and Molly Clare Gilbert and great-grandchild Michael Blaine Edwards.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Glenwood Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Edwards Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Michael Edwards, Robert Edwards, Payton Edwards, Lee Hardy, Bobby Welch and Lee McTeer. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Christopher Edwards, Morris Ratliff, Chris Ratliff, Bryan Ratliff, Austin Gilbert, Mike Willoughby, Steve Wilson, Justin McDaniel, Bob Harris, Percy Worley. Dr. David Headley, Johnny Lewis, Jr. and Jerry Mac.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Parkinsons Foundation.
