BATON ROUGE, La. (VDN) — Fred McNair has been promoted to Offensive Coordinator at Southern University. Head Coach Terrance Graves made the official announcement on Tuesday as the Jaguars fell to a 1-2 record as they took a 30-7 loss to Alabama State.

“We’re making some changes on offense,” Graves said. “The reason why we’re doing it is simply because he’s a veteran coach, a championship coach, he’s been an OC, and he can add his wisdom and expertise to what we’re doing to help us out. Everybody’s on board. Those are changes we feel we have to make in order to give ourselves a chance.”

McNair is in his second year with the program after spending last season as an assistant coach.

Coach McNair led the Alcorn State Braves for eight seasons and coached the team to four SWAC East Division titles and a pair of SWAC Championships. McNair holds a 38-17 SWAC record (.691 winning percentage) on the Alcorn State sidelines while posting an overall record of 48-34 (.585). In his final season, the Braves posted a 7-4 overall and 6-2 SWAC record.

McNair also played football for the Braves. He began his collegiate football career as a wide receiver at Alcorn in 1986, before moving to quarterback his junior season. After making the move under center, McNair went on to finish fifth in the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) in passing efficiency during his senior year, and was named to the SWAC all-conference second team following the 1989 campaign. He received his bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State in 1992, before going on to earn his master’s in education in 1996.
