Stirgus leads Fort Scott CC to a first round tournament win

Vicksburg native Alexus Stirgus coached her team to a first round tournament win on Monday. Stirgus is the Head Coach of Fort Scott Community College in Kansas and they pulled off a 72-57 win over Neosho County Community College.

Under Stirgus’ leadership, Kyleigh Scoggins put up 29 points in the win. Caitlyn Foltz added 14 points and Hailie Edmondson scored 12 points while Marie Han contributed eight points.

Stirgus is in her first year as Head Coach at Fort Scott where the team has now advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 6 Tournament. They will face Allen County on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Stirgus Bio:

Alexus Stirgus spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Arkansas University. During her time in Magnolia, Stirgus aided the Muleriders to 42 wins, and two Great American Conference Tournament appearances and was instrumental in the development of five All-GAC players.

In four seasons, the Muleriders rated among the nation’s best in turning opponents over. SAU held top 10 rankings nationally in steals per game in all four of Stirgus’ seasons including the 2023-24 campaign that saw SAU rank fifth in Division II at 14.2. Additionally, the Muleriders ranked inside the nation’s top 15 in turnovers forced each season which included the sixth-highest mark in the country in ’23-24 at 24.50 turnovers forced per game. In her first three seasons, SAU boasted a top-ten scoring offense and the Muleriders led the country in three-point attempts per game and three-point makes per game in 2022-23.

Prior to Southern Arkansas, Stirgus served for two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi College of the Gulf South Conference. The Lady Choctaws won 21 games in her two seasons as a graduate assistant, including a five-win improvement overall and a six-win improvement in GSC play in 2019-20. 

Before joining the MC staff in 2018, Stirgus spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Clinton High School (MS) where she helped the Lady Arrows to playoff berths in two of her three seasons. 

A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Stirgus’ time in Clinton began several years before her appointment as a graduate assistant as she played for the Lady Choctaws from 2012-14. While at MC, Stirgus averaged 12.2 points 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game as a team captain, while the Lady Choctaws won 23 games over two seasons, including 18 in the GSC. She spent her first two collegiate seasons at Copiah Lincoln Community College where she helped lead CLCC to a MACJC State Title, a regional championship, and an NJCAA National Tournament appearance. 

Stirgus received her Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences from Mississippi College in December of 2014 and she is currently working toward her Master of Science in Athletic Administration from Mississippi College.
