VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Warren County Board of Supervisors voted this morning for the Old Mississippi River Bridge to be open to pedestrian traffic on Friday, Aug. 29, and Friday, Sept. 19.

The bridge will be open to pedestrians from noon to 5 p.m. on both dates. As always, pets are not allowed.

Now only a railroad bridge, the old Mississippi River bridge was closed to motor vehicle traffic in 1998. Since then, the bridge’s narrow two-lane road opens for pedestrian traffic only on special occasions, including Supper on the ‘Sip, United Way of West Central Mississippi largest annual fundraiser.

The bridge was built by the Vicksburg Bridge & Terminal Co. and opened May 1, 1930. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

This event is free and open to the public.
