VHS boys win North State; girls earn second-place finish
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg High School boys track and field team claimed the North State Championship on Tuesday, while the Missy Gators finished as runners-up in the girls competition.
Jayden Woods led the way for the boys with a first-place finish in the discus at 133 feet, 1.50 inches, and Dayquan Warfield won the 400-meter dash. The 4×200-meter relay team of Landon Prentiss, James Warfield, Jayden Stewart and Quartaveon Thomas also secured a first-place finish in 1 minute, 28.54 seconds.
Marquis Knight placed third in the long jump, Fa’Darrius Davis finished fourth in the pole vault and Shaun Archer Jr. took second in the discus with a throw of 131-9. Jaylen Butler earned third place in the 400-meter dash, while Thomas McKnight finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.54 seconds.
In relay action, the 4×400 team of Knight, Prentiss, Casey Brown and Butler placed fourth, while the 4×100 team of Prentiss, McKnight, Warfield and Reginald Nash finished third.
The Missy Gators turned in a strong showing to finish second overall, highlighted by multiple top finishes:
- Zion Knox: 1st place triple jump (35-4), 2nd place long jump, 3rd place high jump
- Amiyah Hall: 1st place 100m (11.90), 1st place 200m (24.39)
- Alaina Williams: 4th place shot put
- Xhiareia Darensburg: 2nd place 100m (16.77)
- 4×400 relay (Aliyah Brinner, Toni Carter, Allison Brinner, Keonya Buck): 3rd place
- 4×200 relay: 4th place
