Vicksburg, Miss.-The Vicksburg High School girls’ basketball team is back to their winning ways as they are set to host the first round of the State Tournament tonight. The Missy Gators will take on Center Hill at 5:30 p.m. on Friday where a win will keep their season alive and a loss will end it all.

Last week’s district tournament proved one thing, which is VHS still has the “magic touch” when it comes to winning big games. The Missy Gators started things off with a 62-46 win over Warren Central which was followed by a 53-46 victory over Neshoba Central.

“We overachieved and I think we did a great job of finishing and we came in third but found a way to beat Neshoba and make it to the district championship game so I’m proud of them,” VHS Head Coach Troy Stewart said.

Lately, Cynia Johnson and Zion Harvey have carried their weight by having 18 and 27-point performances recently. The win against Neshoba granted the opportunity for Jada Erwin to come out of her shell where she put up a career-high of 12 points.

“The rest of the team really stepped up and played well and bought into what we’ve been doing,” Stewart said. “Neshoba has been our nemesis for the last five or six years so it was really important to win when it mattered but we’re not going to put too much stock in that because if we win on Friday, it’s a great chance that we will see them again.”

Jordan Grace and Ny’Keria Watson also had recent performances that contributed to the Missy Gators’ success as playoffs are just a few hours away.

The Missy Gators are going into Friday with a 17-12 record and Center Hill is 12-15. Coach Stewart is asking for a big turnout for today’s game as the girls can use plenty of support.

“I want everyone to come out and watch us and I mean everyone in the city because that’ll give us enough confidence to beat anyone,” Stewart said.
