City amends MOU to apply $5M for street repairs

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — At a Special Call Meeting by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Vicksburg, the city was able to amend a Memorandum of Understanding in order to apply $5 million to street repairs.
In 2021, the Mississippi Legislature authorized expenditures from the 2021 Local Improvements Projects fund in an amount not to exceed $5,000,000.00 for the purpose of paying costs associated with the Levee Street Road Truck Route.
The original purpose of the funds was deemed not eligible to move forward, therefore an amendment in the State legislature allowed the funds to be relocated.
A 2026 Bill allowed the funds to be relocated for the purpose of paying costs associated with repairs, overlay, and restriping of portions of Clay Street and Washington Street.
At the Monday, Aug. 31, Special Call Meeting, the City Board passed an amendment in order to allow the funds to pay for the repairs.
Vicksburg Mayor Willis Thompson said the funds were a good thing for the city.
“And I will add that this was one of the requests that this Board made to the Legislature this past session to have those funds relocated for the project of paving the main corridors which Clay Street and Washington Street is definitely part of those main travel areas,” said Mayor Thompson. “I see it as a win because most cities don’t have $5 million to spend on anything, but we get to relocate theses funds. It’s not a new tax and its not borrowed funds because we got this appropriations from the legislature. Its a good way to kick off our infrastructure plans for this term.”
The amendment passed unanimously.
