VHS took a 28-23 loss to Forest Hill
Vicksburg High School took a 28-23 loss to Forest Hill on Friday.The Gators got on the board first as they earned a safety after the Patriots’ bad exchange. DeCorey Knight Jr. showed some good footwork for VHS as he picked up multiple first downs before scoring a 15-yard touchdown. Abel Gonzalez kicked the successful extra point as the score was set at 9-0.Forest Hill nearly scored on the last play of the first quarter until Mincer Minor IV hit the receiver and forced a fumble. Forest Hill earned a safety on the first play of the second quarter that put things at 9-2.It wouldn’t take long for the Patriots to get on the board again after they caught a long pass and ran it in the end zone on the next play. The failed extra point kept VHS ahead 9-8.Coming out of halftime, Forest Hill ate up a lot of the clock and eventually scored a 6-yard touchdown that gave them a 14-9 lead. Just before the end of the third, the Patriots ran a 53-yard dive for another score that put them up 20-9.The Gators got right back in it as Knight returned a 75-yard kick return touchdown. Gonzalez made it 20-16 after the good extra point. Stephen Anderson and Cameron Nailor both made some defensive stops to help VHS get the ball back. Knight broke out on a 68-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter but it was called back for holding. Jamikal Maxey hit Thomas Hardiman on a long pass and Knight broke out again but it was called back once more for a penalty. Cedric Blackmore took things into his own hands as he powered his way for a 20-yard touchdown to give the Gators a 23-20 lead.FH responded with a 60-yard touchdown to take the 28-23 win.VHS will host Natchez on Friday.
