HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas. (VDN) — Vicksburg native Jaylen “Munchie” Mason has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards this season for Harker Heights High School in Texas. The standout running back has been a dominant force for the Knights, who are on the verge of clinching a district championship.

Born in Vicksburg and now a Texas resident, Mason recently helped lead Harker Heights to a 28-10 win over Shoemaker High School. He rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, scoring on runs of 23 and 17 yards.

“We had the best team performance that night and everyone was on the same page and had the same mindset,” Mason said.

Mason has been one of the Knights’ most consistent playmakers this season. Through eight games, he has totaled 1,178 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging an impressive 10 yards per carry. He currently holds one scholarship offer to play at the collegiate level.

A former Central Texas Player of the Week, Mason has also been named Harker Heights Player of the Week six times. He is ranked as the No. 1 running back in the Killeen Independent School District. His best performance of the season came in a 63-7 win over Bryan High School, when he rushed for 207 yards and four touchdowns.

With Mason leading the offense, the Knights sit at 7-2 overall and 5-0 in district play, needing just one more win to secure the district title. They will host Temple High School this week.

“I’m feeling great about this week, and we’ve built a lot of confidence recently, so we’re elevating every week,” Mason said.

Mason is the son of Jimmay Mason and Makitta Wingard (Daryl).
