Held on Good Friday at Vicksburg High School, the training was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security. School resource officers used their day off to participate in the exercise, focusing on preparedness in the event of a critical incident.

The training, led by Campus Police Chief LaToria Kerr, included participation from the Vicksburg Police Department, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Vicksburg Fire Department and Warren County Emergency Management.

Participants spent the morning reviewing response tactics and protocols for an active shooter situation. By the afternoon, the training shifted to a hands-on simulation, featuring a realistic reenactment of a school shooting scenario.

During the exercise, law enforcement officers entered the building and successfully neutralized the simulated threat. Once the scene was secured, first responders moved in to assess and treat the injured, reinforcing coordination between agencies.

The scenario was repeated multiple times to ensure participants were confident and efficient in their roles.

The training highlighted the commitment of local law enforcement and emergency personnel to use their time and resources to strengthen their skills and better protect the community.

Chief Kerr oversees school resource officers assigned throughout the district, with support from Assistant Police Chief Rodney Lehman. School resource officers are often the first to respond to incidents on campus, making ongoing training essential.

The exercise comes amid continued concerns about school safety nationwide. In 2026, at least eight school shootings have been reported across the United States, following 78 incidents in 2025.

Officials said the training reflects a proactive approach to safety and underscores the value of investing in preparedness for first responders.
