Watson named Defensive Coordinator at Briarfield Academy
Lake Providence, LA – Vicksburg native Derrick Watson has been named the new Defensive Coordinator at Briarfield Academy. Watson, who recently coached at St. Aloysius, will also take on head coaching of the junior high squad.
After spending the last four years with the Flashes, Watson has now made the move across the bridge to help lead the Briarfield’s program.
Before breaking into coaching, Watson earned plenty of football experience from his time starting at Jackson State University and being a successful athletic trainer in the Vicksburg community, along with playing in both the Arena and Canadian Football League.
Watson graduated from VHS in 1995. During his 1994 senior season, he helped the Gators to an 8-4 record and then went on to star at Jackson State University. He was a walk-on at JSU and earned the starting spot. In 2002, he was one of the best cornerbacks in SWAC football. He was also a track star who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. He used his speed to help him dominate on the football field and secure a starting spot at JSU.
Before coaching at Briarfield and St. Aloysius, Watson was on the Vicksburg High School football staff where he assisted with the secondary.
Briarfield will have their first game on Friday when they travel to face Franklin Academy.
