‘You’re not forgotten’: Triumph Church food pantry provides hope to our community
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — On the first Wednesday of every month beginning at 5 p.m. at Triumph Church, the driveway transforms into a lifeline for the community. Cars gently pull through as volunteers, guided by kindness, load households up with bags of groceries; freshly packed staples, meats, and essentials that ease hunger and spark hope.
Volunteers, often working in pairs, identify household names, double-check signups, and load groceries directly into cars. For those who can’t make it on the fixed day, the pantry offers flexibility by individual appointments to ensure everyone can be served.
Since the late 1990s, the food pantry, originally inspired by the Pastor Mike Fields’ grandmother and once called “Feed My Sheep” has stood as a beacon of care, feeding the hungry through ministry and deeply rooted love.
Their ability to serve has grown over time. After collaborating with the USDA and later joining the Mississippi Food Network, the church now supports a network of around 40–50 volunteers. These devoted helpers drive to Jackson twice monthly, repackage nutritious food, and regularly comfort those in need.
Carolyn Cole, the pantry’s director, sees beyond groceries. She sees families. Currently, the pantry supports over 350 families each month, offering more than just food, but a message: you’re not forgotten.
In July 2025, Triumph Church received a $10,000 grant from Entergy’s Grand Gulf Nuclear Station. The funds are going towards a new walk-in freezer, allowing the pantry to store much larger quantities of frozen goods, fresh meats, vegetables, and wholesome meals.
“This grant is truly a blessing… this freezer will help us serve even more families in need,” Cole said. “We’re not just giving out food, we’re helping families thrive”
Recognizing growing needs, Triumph Church recently began constructing a new, attached building next to their current 20’×40′ facility. This expansion will double their processing capabilities, including space for washing and packaging fresh vegetables for distribution, which is a step that elevates both quality and quantity of aid.
Each volunteer, each donated can, each sign-up form weaves a story of community caring. Together, Triumph Church and its partners are crafting a model of compassionate, practical ministry: feeding bodies and souls, one family at a time.
