VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — After Amazon Web Services announced a $3 Billion investment in Warren County to build a data center, locals in Vicksburg began raising concerns over energy costs.

Many communities across the community have raised similar concerns that the data centers will drive up costs for all energy users. In an effort to offset the concerns tech giants gathered in Washington to sign an energy pledge to provide their own energy to power the centers.

The “Ratepayer Protection Pledge” was first announced by Trump in his State of the Union Address, and comes as communities and state legislators increase scrutiny and criticism of the growing data centers.

On hand to sign were Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI, and Amazon. Other smaller AI companies also pledged the same.

Data centers consume vast amounts of electricity to run server racks and cooling systems for the development of technologies like artificial intelligence; therefore a stable solution for energy use is needed.

According to Reuters, the pledge includes a commitment by technology companies to bring or buy electricity supplies for their data centers, either from new power plants or existing plants with expanded output capacity. It also includes commitments from Big Tech to pay for upgrades to power delivery systems and to enter special electricity rate agreements with utilities.

In the case with the AWS’ deal with Vicksburg, the tech giant struck a deal with Entergy Mississippi. Just prior to the AWS announcement, Entergy also announced a $1.2 Billion investment to build a new production plant.

According to Entergy, Vicksburg will once again be home to an Entergy Mississippi power generation source with construction of the Vicksburg Advanced Power Station, the company’s latest investment to replace retired, 50-year-old natural gas generation facilities with newer, highly efficient resources. The 754-megawatt combined-cycle combustion turbine facility will be located on the grounds of the former Baxter Wilson Steam Electric Station and, along with already-announced plants in Greenville and Ridgeland, will help ensure Entergy Mississippi’s 459,000 customers continue to have efficient, reliable and affordable energy.

All of this comes as Vicksburg continues to seek investment opportunities from companies all over the world ignorer to boost the local economy.
