VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — For the first time in history, students from Vicksburg High School and Warren Central High School joined together to compete as one unified team in the Mississippi Teen CERT Challenge. The EMT class, led by Marquis Holmes in collaboration with Kimberly Michelle and Associates, represented Vicksburg with pride at the statewide event sponsored by Mississippi Homeland Security and hosted at the Mississippi State Fire Academy.
According to Kimberly Stevens, the students demonstrated exceptional dedication, teamwork, and determination throughout the competition.
“I am so proud of their hard work and their willingness to come together and perform as one team,” Stevens said.
The team competed in multiple emergency response scenarios. In the Suspect Apprehension event, Tejay McKinney recorded the fastest time of the competition, completing the course in just 46 seconds.
In Firefighting and Utility Control, Anitra McWilliams, Jazmine Hester, Kemiya Evans, Ashanti Ward, Lazaria Thomas, and Shantrice Claiborne earned perfect scores for their performance.
In the Crime Scene Investigation event, team members Kemiya Evans, Shantrice Claiborne, Lazaria Thomas, and Ashanti Ward went above and beyond expectations, scoring higher than the standard range due to the depth and accuracy of their investigation.
“We know there’s still work to be done, but I am incredibly excited about what’s ahead for these students and what next year will bring,” said Kimberly Stevens. Special thanks were extended to Cleveland Allison and Assistant Fire Chief Courtney Reed for their continued support in making this a success.
