Vicksburg’s Morgan Nelson earns $11,500 in scholarships, begins medical school after Miss Mississippi success
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
For Morgan Nelson, chasing dreams has never been about reaching a single destination. It has been about embracing every opportunity with determination, faith and grace.
The Vicksburg native added another remarkable milestone to her journey in June when she was named first runner-up in the Miss Mississippi Pageant, an accomplishment that earned her $11,500 in scholarships and brought her total scholarship earnings through the Miss Mississippi Corporation to more than $25,000.
“It was amazing and I’ve been competing for about four and a half years but to get that close and earn those scholarship dollars was a great experience,” Nelson said.
While the audience witnessed Nelson’s poised performance on stage as she advanced to the Top 11 before finishing as first runner-up, she said some of the pageant’s most meaningful moments happened away from the spotlight.
Morgan also said she never imagined herself reaching this point, but the journey has transformed her into a new person. She recalled the memories that few people saw, including contestants laughing together in the dressing room and encouraging one another throughout the competition.
As her name was called throughout the competition, a packed crowd watched Nelson capture the hearts of the audience while establishing herself as one of the state’s top pageant competitors.
Family and friends gathered Sunday evening at The View to celebrate Nelson’s accomplishments alongside those of her brother, Ryan Nelson, who was recently drafted by the Cincinnati Reds.
“I have to say how proud I am of my brother and I’m excited to see where he goes in life and he knows that I’ll be taking that flight out to Cincinnati,” Morgan said.

Although many are already looking ahead to next year’s Miss Mississippi Pageant, Nelson said she is placing her future in God’s hands.
“I’m letting the Lord guide me through my next few phases of my life and I know that his plan is the one I need to be in,” she added.
Even as her pageant success continues to inspire others, Nelson has already turned her attention to another lifelong goal. She is now attending the University of Mississippi Medical School, where she is pursuing her dream of becoming a physician.
Long before her success at Miss Mississippi and her acceptance into medical school, Nelson had already built an impressive résumé. She previously served as Miss Vicksburg, Miss Starkville and Miss Mississippi State University, using each title as an opportunity to represent her communities with distinction.
With thousands of dollars in scholarships earned, a place in medical school secured and an unwavering faith guiding her next steps, Nelson continues to prove that success is measured not only by titles won, but by a commitment to serving others. As she begins the next chapter of her life, the Vicksburg native remains a source of pride for her hometown and an example of what perseverance, humility and purpose can achieve.
