Merit Health River Region to host cancer walk
Join the fight against cancer at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Vicksburg. Support awareness and research.

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Merit Health River Region has announced its upcoming Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, taking place Saturday, Oct. 17, at Catfish Row Art Park, 1200 Levee Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi. The walk will begin at 7 a.m.
The event will bring community members, healthcare professionals, businesses, organizations, breast cancer survivors, families and supporters together to raise awareness and funds in support of the American Cancer Society’s efforts to reduce the impact of breast cancer.
Merit Health River Region is inviting the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas to get involved. Volunteers, vendors, and sponsors are currently being sought to help with the event and create an opportunity for the community to come together in support of those affected by breast cancer.
“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is about bringing our community together to raise awareness and critical funds to help advance cancer research, provide support and resources for patients and families, and educate our community about breast cancer prevention and early detection. Every dollar raised and every voice lifted brings us closer to better treatments, improved outcomes, and a future in which fewer lives are affected by this disease. We are proud to see Mississippi continue to come together and make a meaningful difference in the fight against breast cancer,” said Monty Permenter, Senior Manager, Events, American Cancer Society
For Julie Lee, a mammography technologist who has served Merit Health River Region for 27 years, the event is an opportunity to encourage women to prioritize their breast health and support those affected by breast cancer.
“After 27 years of performing mammograms, I’ve seen firsthand how important early detection is and how breast cancer affects not only patients but their entire families. Every mammogram represents someone’s mother, daughter, sister or friend. This walk is an opportunity for our community to stand together, encourage women to prioritize their breast health, and remind those facing breast cancer that they are not alone.” said Julie Lee, Mammography Technologist, Merit Health River Region.
