Atlanta Journal-Constitution names Vicksburg a must-visit cultural destination

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg has been recognized as one of seven travel destinations rich in arts, culture, and history by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The city joins international and domestic locations, including Venice, Italy; Hanapepe, Hawaii; and Washington, D.C.
The feature, Spring Travel: Broaden Your Horizons at Destinations Rich in Arts, Culture and History, highlights Vicksburg’s historic significance, from its early French settlement at Fort St. Pierre to the 32 murals along the Mississippi River depicting the city’s past and present.
Other featured destinations by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution include Cowboy Corridor, Nevada; Hanapepe, Hawaii; Ottawa, Ontario; Washington, D.C.; Venice, Italy; and Marquette, Michigan.
Upcoming Vicksburg 200 Events
As part of Vicksburg’s bicentennial celebrations, the city has planned a series of cultural events throughout the year.
- Music & Culture Festival (April 26, 2025): This annual celebration, formerly known as the Arts & Music Festival, will showcase local and regional musicians alongside cultural performances, dance, and theater. The event will once again partner with the Alcorn State University Jazz Festival.
- Independence Weekend (July 4-5, 2025): The city will host its annual Fourth of July fireworks display, the longest in Mississippi. A dragon boat race will follow on July 5 in the Yazoo River/Mississippi River Canal.
- Hipstoric Art Festival (Sept. 26-28, 2025): This festival will feature artists displaying their work in Vicksburg’s downtown area. It is scheduled alongside other major art festivals in the South, including the Cottonwood Art Festival in Dallas and RiverArtsFest in Memphis.
- Fall Family Fair (Oct. 4, 2025): A homecoming-themed event will include live music, games, and family-friendly activities.
- “Voices From The Hills” (Oct. 16-18, 2025): Presented by the Cedar Hill Cemetery Association, this event will explore local history through storytelling.
