VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Vicksburg Fire Department is investigating what appears to be attempted arson of a vacant Hillcrest St. home on Wednesday evening.

At approximately 8:08 p.m. Wednesday, the Vicksburg Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 901 Hillcrest St., according to Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps.

“Upon arrival, crews did not initially observe smoke or flames,” Stamps said. “However, after speaking with neighbors, they conducted a further inspection and discovered a shattered window at the back of the vacant structure.”

Using forcible entry techniques, firefighters accessed the building and found it filled with smoke. Inside, they discovered a rolled-up shirt soaked in a flammable liquid, Stamps said.

Fire crews ventilated the house to clear the smoke, and no injuries were reported.

The attempted arson is currently under investigation.

On October 21, 2024, a nearby vacant home, 902 Hillcrest was fully engulfed by the time the Vicksburg Fire Department arrived on the scene. The homeowner reported having ongoing issues with individuals trespassing on the property. According to Chief Stamps, that fire was intentionally set, describing the cause of that blaze to be “incendiary.”
