VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Bernice Murphy, a Vicksburg native, has been honored for 30 years of dedicated service as a case manager with the Warren County Children’s Shelter. Murphy, who has spent three decades working to improve the lives of vulnerable youth, reflected on her career and the moments that have shaped her commitment to the mission.

Murphy said one experience early in her career has stayed with her as a reminder of why the work matters. She recalled helping a young person who arrived at the shelter burdened with trauma, mistrust and fear.

“Instead of seeing behaviors, I learned to see the story behind them,” Murphy said. “Over time, through patience, consistency and genuine connection, I watched this young person begin to believe in the possibility of safety and hope again.”

She said the breakthrough came unexpectedly, when the youth told her, “This is the first place where I feel seen.” That moment, she said, reaffirmed the shelter’s mission of meeting people where they are and honoring their humanity.

Murphy said the most meaningful impact often comes from small, everyday acts of compassion — listening, showing up and offering grace.

“Canopy has taught me that when we lead with empathy, we create conditions for growth, not just for the youth and families we serve, but for ourselves as well,” she said.

Murphy added that she is grateful for the privilege of serving and learning from her colleagues, and for witnessing the resilience of the families supported by the shelter — experiences that continue to fuel her dedication to the work.
