Shardez Taylor, a Vicksburg native, helped Alcorn State University secure a thrilling victory Saturday in the Southern Heritage Classic. Taylor was one of the Braves’ lead blockers on the offensive line as Alcorn State earned a 53-51 double-overtime win over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Taylor started in Saturday night’s victory and helped pave the way for 702 yards of total offense. He showcased his pass-blocking ability as Alcorn State racked up 488 passing yards while also making an impact in the running game. The Braves finished with 214 rushing yards and 34 first downs.
Taylor began his high school career at Vicksburg High School under former head coach Tim Hughes before relocating to Texas for his senior season. He finished his prep career at Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, where he shared the field with future professional quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Taylor played a key role on the Tigers’ offensive line, helping protect Sanders as the offense produced nearly 4,000 passing yards and captured the 2020 TCAL national championship.
Following his high school career, Taylor continued playing football at East Mississippi Community College before transferring to the University of Southern Mississippi.
