West Point, Ms- Vicksburg native Brett Morgan has led West Point High School to a District Championship in his first year as Head Football Coach. Morgan and the Green Waves officially earned the title of district champions after Thursday night’s 14-7 win over New Hope High School.

Back in January, Morgan accepted the position as Head Coach after spending over a decade on the staff as he helped West Point to five state championships.

Morgan’s first two games as Head Coach started off rocky as he took losses to Louisville where they fell short 15-14 and Starkville 33-23. West Point quickly got things turned around in week three after picking up a 20-18 win over Noxubee County which marked Morgan’s first win as Head Coach.

The following week, the Green Wave secured a 21-7 victory over Neshoba Central before falling short to Tupelo in week four. After the loss to Tupelo, West Point entered district play where they went undefeated and earned a district title.

In district play, West Point defeated Corinth High School, Clarksdale, Lafayette, Pontotoc, and New Hope High School. The Green Wave’s offense averaged 30.4 four points per game in district play while the defense only allowed 7.8 points per game.

“We’re leaning on (the defense), and we’re going to need to get them crutches as hard as we’re leaning on them, but they keep fighting and that’s what they want,” Morgan told The Dispatch. “We’ve got eight starters back from last year, they’ve been in the fire and they play for four quarters. Our staff does a great job preparing them for that and I can’t say enough about them.”

West Point now has an overall record of 7-3 and 5-0 in the district as they’ve earned home-field advantage for next week’s playoff game under Morgan’s leadership.
