Charlie’s Gyrocopters: Vicksburg Man returns to flying in style

VICKSBURG, Miss – Vicksburg’s Charles Harrison loves to fly. Of the many different aircraft Harrison has flown over the years, he says that helicopters are his favorite. Returning to flying after years away, he chose the more affordable gyrocopters, and now owns two which are housed at the Vicksburg Airport.

“They are Wal-Mart blue and Crop-duster yellow,” Harrison said.

The only other gyrocopter he knows of in Mississippi is at Louisville. Gyrocopters are small aircraft with a large rotor on top and a propeller behind that combines the characteristics of both a helicopter and a plane, at much less cost to own and operate.

“It’s the most fun flying I’ve ever done,” said Harrision.

The blue Magni M24 gyrocopter is a 144-horsepower Italian model and was purchased from Gulf Shores, Alabama. The pilot and passenger sit side-by-side.

The yellow 100-horsepower German made Autogyro is an open cockpit with two seats one behind the other. That unit took 11 months to arrive and the rotor blades were installed here in Vicksburg with help from airport director Ron Davis. In addition to running the airport, Davis is a pilot, airplane mechanic, and an Authorized Inspector of aircraft.

The craft can be seen flying in the Vicksburg Warren County area whenever the urge hits Harrison.
